Overview of the Project

Client & Context
The Army Law College, situated in Kanhe near Pune, is a fully residential institution established in 2018 by the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES), with the objective of providing quality, affordable legal education to children of army personnel . It’s affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University and approved by the Bar Council of India.

 

Project Phasing & Planning

  1. Phase I – Immediate Setup (2018):

    • Renovation of existing structures to house initial batches.

    • Rapid deployment of infrastructure to begin academic operations promptly .

  2. Phase II – Full Infrastructure Rollout:

    • Erection of the Academic-Administrative (“Chanakya”) Block, featuring smart classrooms, faculty offices, and conference spaces.

    • Construction of the “Sai” Auditorium, a modern 450-seat hall equipped with advanced audio-visual technology.

  3. Phase III – Residential Expansion:

    • In 2021, a five-storey girls’ hostel with a capacity of 165 students, complete with gym, dining, recreation, and library facilities, was inaugurated.



Architectural Implementation & Facilities

  • Academic Facilities:
    Smart-enabled classrooms and seminars spaces cater to modern pedagogical needs. The auditorium supports large-scale events, competitions, and conferences.

  • Residential Infrastructure:
    Separate girls’ hostel with social and fitness amenities, reinforcing comfort and discipline. Early infrastructure included boys’ hostels and shared facilities for all students.

  • Library & Learning Resources:
    The well-equipped library offers a vast collection of law and management texts, access to online legal databases, group discussion rooms, and supports customized book requests.

  • Classrooms & Technology:
    Spacious, air-conditioned classrooms equipped with smartboards, AV systems, and quality furniture ensure an interactive learning environment.

  • Sports & Well-being:
    Extensive sports infrastructure includes multiple football pitches, courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and three well-equipped gyms. A daily PT routine fosters discipline and physical resilience.

  • Hostel Life:
    The hostels are clean, secure, and thoughtfully maintained, with 24/7 surveillance, generators, well-functioning mess facilities offering diverse cuisine, and daily roll calls as part of disciplined living.

  • Campus Amenities & Student Support:
    The campus includes a computer lab, moot court hall, cafeteria, medical center, and Wi-Fi accessible across all academic and residential zones.


Vision & Social Impact

The college aims to develop legal professionals who are ethically grounded and globally aware — aiming to address challenges like digital rights, environmental law, migration, and privacy concerns.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Land and initial buildings were generously donated by the Radha Kaliandas Daryanani Charitable Trust.

  • Inaugural ceremonies featured senior army leaders, underscoring the institutional backing and importance of the project.


Current Context & Challenges

Recent student protests (August 2025) have underscored tensions regarding academic administration, student council functionality, and financial transparency. These led to involvement from Savitribai Phule Pune University and calls for an official inquiry and resolution.

Architecturally and functionally, the Army Law College, Pune reflects a thoughtful, phased approach — integrating academic, residential, and co-curricular facilities that uphold both educational and disciplinary standards. ALC’s design harmonizes rigorous legal training with holistic student development, grounding its identity in both military precision and scholarly aspiration.
